
How we actually build ultra-long IR heaters for glass tunnels
If you’re working with large-format glass, you know the struggle. To keep that glass from cracking or warping, you need a heating zone that stretches for meters. The problem? Most standard infrared lamps stop at one or two meters. Now, when you need a run longer than that, the temptation is to just string a bunch of short bulbs together. We don’t do that. Instead, we build custom, long-form units that actually fit the layout of your tunnel. The battle against cold spots Here’s the thing: the biggest headache with long heaters is the “cold spot.” Usually, these pop up right at the joints. It ruins the whole batch. To fix this, we use a continuous line of high-wattage quartz elements. We get really picky about the wattage per centimeter to make sure the heat stays flat across the entire span. And we have to watch out for voltage drop. If the power dips by the time it hits the end of the line, your tunnel runs cold. We solve that by balancing the electrical load across a few different circuits. That way, the edges and the center hit the exact same temperature. No surprises. The hardware side of things We use heavy-wall quartz tubing because these long spans take a beating. If you don’t support them right, they’ll sag. It’s as simple as that. To keep everything perfectly parallel to the glass, we snap in rigid mounting brackets every 300mm to 500mm. For the connections, we stick with industrial-grade terminals. They can handle the constant heating and cooling without burning out or getting brittle. A few things to keep in mind Just a heads-up: longer lamps pull a lot more current. You can’t just plug these into a wall outlet and hope for the best. You’ll need to double-check your power supply and use a thicker wiring gauge so your cables don’t overheat. Plus, these units put out a massive amount of radiant energy. It gets hot. Really hot. Make sure your tunnel’s outer shell has great insulation or some active cooling. You don’t want the outside of the machine becoming a safety hazard for anyone walking by.
